Bubble or Exposure? Understanding First-Semester Students‘ Social Networks

Bubble or Exposure? Understanding First-Semester Students‘ Social Networks

Zu Gast in der kommenden Sitzung der ADILT Ringvorlesung sind Prof. Dr. Susumu Shikano und Marius Helten (Politik- und Verwaltungswissenschaft):

This presentation demonstrates the formation and consequences of social networks among first-semester students, drawing on original data from a three-wave panel survey conducted during the past winter term.

We address three core questions:
(1) How do students perceive their peers? –with a focus on false consensus effects in political orientation;
(2) How do students form interpersonal ties? -—analyzing both individual-level mechanisms such as homophily in friendship, political discussion, and learning group, as well as network-endogenous dynamics including reciprocity and transitivity, and
(3) Do students’ networks influence their own attitudes and beliefs? —-investigating contagion effects on ideological orientation (left–right) and self-assessed academic performance.

We also provide an overview of our data collection strategy and implementation, detailing how the panel design allows us to trace changes in perceptions, ties, and individual attitudes/beliefs over time. Our findings offer insights into the extent to which students’ early university experience is shaped by social closure or exposure to diversity.
